Loving yourself
I belong to a couple fitness and weight loss related groups on Facebook, and a lot of the posts today have got me to thinking. Our economy and our culture THRIVES on making people feel like they are less than, not good enough, broken, too heavy, and making people be self loathing. A lot of people were talking about their habits over the weekend and often referred to their eating habits as 'bad' or foods as 'bad.'
We put so much emotion or many characteristics on inanimate objects or choices. There is no emotion in those things. There are choices that make us feel proud of our choices, and make our bodies feel nourished, and then there are choices that make us feel less proud of our choices and make our bodies feel less nourished and sometimes even sick. That's it. Simply.
I think back to when I wanted to be 'thin' (which was a rather significant portion of my life). I came from a place of not honoring my body for all that it has done. I came from a place of thinking negative thoughts about how I looked because it was 'less than ideal.' And it got to me a place where I yo-yo dieted for most of my life. Fast forward to the last 4 years. I've been up a little, I've been down a little. But I've maintained at least a 50 pound weight loss for that amount of time. While honoring my body, and loving myself through it. Believe me, I have had my moments of self doubt and have to re-direct my thinking. And my self awareness helped me realize this summer I sort of relaxed a little too much and was more unhealthy that I prefer. But, for the first time since being a heavy kid I honor myself for being strong, active and healthy. While also working to be stronger, more active, more fit and healthier.
Nothing is as cut and dry as 'good' and 'bad' in the world of healthy living. Some things are healthier, some less healthy. Sometimes mentally one has to just cut loose and enjoy something they would like as a treat. And that's more than ok. We are human, we are beautiful and we are meant to navigate through this world with love. And that starts with ourselves.
If you wouldn't say something to someone else's face (you're fat, you're ugly, you're worthless), why on earth would we ever say something like that to ourselves?
Do me a huge favor today and say (into a mirror if you're willing), "I am beautiful, I am strong, I am capable." You will open your world to effortless change (if that's what you and only you are after) in the process. We are the only ones who change the culture, by being leading examples of self confident, self loving behavior.
With love on this Sunday,
Kara
